Thinking about starting a side business? You can do it! Really! There are enough resources online to help motivated individuals start the side businesses of their dreams. All it takes to launch a business is an idea and action to bring it to life.
Today, I offer three tips for challenging, changing, and focusing your mindset so that you start your side business off on the right foot. I also offer three tips specifically geared toward launching my favorite kind of side business: a side business in digital marketing and search engine optimization (SEO).
Tip #1: Crush your self-doubt.
If you don’t feel confident in your abilities yet, fake it until you make it. You have the ability to change your life, launch a business, and achieve your goals. I know it, even if you don’t know it yet, that you can develop self-confidence and confidence in your ability to have a successful side business!
I have been my own worst enemy, doubting myself and my abilities at every turn. I started reading books like The Alchemist and Think and Grow Rich to help me build up my confidence. I worked on my self-talk by filling my brain with positive, supportive statements to crowd out the self-doubt.
As time passes, my confidence grows. Your confidence will, too. Smile proudly. You are on your way to being a small business owner!
Tip #2: Eliminate doubters.
Jim Rohn said we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with, so choose to be around those who believe in you.Surround yourself with the five people who believe in you. Immerse yourself in a community of like-minded supporters to cheer you on as you work hard to launch your side business.
Recognizing that there are those in my life who doubt me, I started spending less time with those individuals and more time with others who believe in me and share a similar vision for their lives. At first, it was tough. However, the outcome was better than I could have imagined.
Today, I am surrounded by people who love and support me. You have people in your life who love and support you, too. Find them. Let them know how much you appreciate their support as you embark on a new quest: your very own side business!
Tip #3: Banish worry.
Focus on celebrating successes each and every single day. Spending all of your time working hard on your business and celebrating your success leaves you little time to worry. It’s a big world out there, full of potential clients who could benefit from your help. Celebrate your wins, big and small. You launched a website? Celebrate! You sent an email to one potential client? Celebrate! Your enthusiasm for the big stuff and the small stuff will carry through all aspects of life and business–your clients will see it, too!
Each day, I celebrate small wins in my life and business. Even after a challenging day, I can always find one ray of sunshine. Choosing to focus on the successes each day, rather than the struggles, was key for me to be able adopt a positive, future-focused mindset.
You have the right people behind you to support you. You’re celebrating daily wins. You’re working to crush any worry or self-doubt you have. Now, what do you need to do to run a successful SEO side business?
Tip #4: Be your own megaphone.
And get your first client! Tell everyone you know that you have a side business. Before you begin learning digital marketing and SEO, start marketing yourself by simply letting others know what your plans are. Chances are, you know someone with a website or a small business who can use help with SEO.
We have the online training courses you need to learn SEO, so you can cross that need off your list. What you need is your first client. Find one client while you’re working to complete SEO training. Friends and family members with businesses and blogs likely need help with SEO, so offer up your assistance.
Tip #5: Launch a website.
Typically, you can work in a freelancer/side hustler capacity for small businesses by simply completing a W-9; small businesses issue you a 1099 that you use to file taxes, if you live and work in the US. I worked in this capacity for many years without a website to promote my services.
However, if you are forming a business, you should consider creating a website. For very little money, you can use a resource like Google Sites, SquareSpace, Wix, or Weebly to set up a website–no web design or coding experience required. Simply pick a domain name, one that aligns with the name of your side business, pick a template, and you’re ready to add content that describes your services. It’s so easy that you could launch a website in one evening. Having a website shows you have a legitimate side business and it doubles as a great place to showcase your client testimonials!
When you set up a website, set up an email account where your potential clients can reach you. Use this email address when you post your services on websites such as Upwork, LinkedIn ProFinder, People Per Hour, and more.
Tip #6: Provide excellent customer service.
You want great client testimonials to share on your website and with future clients. The best way to get great testimonials is to provide great customer service. Our online SEO training courses teach you all about SEO and four core SEO services you can offer. We even provide various templates you use for various SEO services. What you need to bring to the table is excellent customer service!
Be a tremendous resource to your client and your client could be of even greater value to your business than the hourly rate they pay you. Happy clients provide testimonials and referrals to other small businesses. Positive, helpful SEO consultants who provide superior customer service to their clients soon find themselves with lots of referrals.
