Joseph Hogue, host of the Let’s Talk Money YouTube Channel, recently talked with Claudia Pennington about how bloggers can get that “Google love,” aka search engine optimization for your website. Claudia shared simple steps to improve your website’s SEO-friendliness. Joseph told his viewers he likes to go to Claudia for her expertise on digital marketing and SEO.
You can watch the complete video below, but here are some highlights from Claudia’s discussion with Joseph about SEO:
1. SEO for your website cannot be a ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ mentality.
Bloggers can install a WordPress plugin to help them improve their SEO, and they think the plugin does all the work. While these plugins can facilitate some of the work, “There is nothing automatic about SEO,” Claudia said. It is easy for people to fall into that mindset because there are so many plugins that automate blogging tasks, but there is no way an SEO plugin can do that.
Joseph pointed out the plugins don’t even begin to touch off-page SEO, strategies that help drive traffic back to a person’s website. His conclusion: People rely on plugins too much. Strategies like link-building and being a guest blogger, take time, and keep a lot of people from doing it. However, “If you dedicate a few hours a week, you can compete with larger more established blogs,” Joseph said.
2. SEO audits reveal issues that might hurt search engine rankings.
While Claudia and her husband, Garrett, run a successful personal finance blog, Two Cup House (where they detailed how they moved into a tiny house and became debt-free), she has become widely known among digital marketers and bloggers for her SEO Audit Guide online course teaching people how they can start a side hustle performing SEO audits for $75 an hour (I am living proof. Read here and here). In her course, Claudia teaches people how to analyze and evaluate a site to determine if there are any issues related to SEO-friendliness, or in Joseph’s parlance: Are these websites getting that Googe love!
Students of the SEO Audit Guide course learn about the importance of page titles, meta descriptions, load times, mobile-friendliness, headers, ALT text, and more. Through these SEO audits, reports are produced showing ways to improve the SEO for your website. It provides your clients a roadmap to rank higher in SERPs (search engine results pages).
“Whether you are new or experienced, it doesn’t matter,” Claudia said. “The audit will tell you what you should be looking for and how to fix it.”
3. Other advice for getting that Google love.
If you want more traffic to your website, if you desire to have your web pages rank higher in Google, Yahoo and Bing searches (you really want to be on that first page), then spend a few minutes watching the video and taking notes as Claudia shares her expertise. Some other take-aways from the video:
- You can learn SEO, and it can become second nature;
- Be aware of two Google updates coming in July, you will want to make sure your websites are in compliance;
- Key items to look at in SEO audits;
- Why being mobile-friendly is critical;
- How small blogs can compete with the big players; and
- Three things every blogger can do today to improve that Google love, aka SEO for your website.
Joseph’s conclusion was a lot of bloggers are behind the curve with SEO audits, but they have started to catch on. Where are you when it comes to SEO audits? Have you done one for your website? If not, then why not? If you have, then are you doing an audit at least every year?
